The machine is us/ing us

We watched a short YouTube video for class today and it was really interesting. I felt the fast pace of the video reflected how quickly the web has evolved. It took me through a virtual tour of many different applications that I didn't even know existed. There are so many ways to gather information on the Internet its amazing. I thought the most interesting point the video made was "we are the web." The fact that the web uses each click, search, post and tag to learn makes me think that it is only going to get smarter as it expands. You can run a business, talk to people on the other side of the world and buy almost anything at the click of a button. Whats next?

  1. I'm also curious to see what's next. I think the video Ellen showed yesterday in class was a good example of where we're headed. We are looking towards even smarter computers and networks.

  2. At first watching the video, I didn't make the connection between the fast-pace of the video and how technology is changing rapidly; that was a very good connection. I think that as the web gets smarter we need to remain as smart and know we are teaching the machine.

  3. What's next is a good question. The video we watched with Ellen stated that the computer will soon be smarter than the whole human race. I can barely keep up with technology the way it is, so the idea of that makes me nervous. I agree with your idea that you can do almost anything with a click of a button. It's exciting to watch technology expand year after year, but scary to think about how impersonal our communication continues to get.

  4. The quote from the short film and the quote you said, "we are the web." Both interested me and freightened me. It interested me by showing that we the people control what information gets out to the world, so sometimes the whole story is not published. And that is what scares me as well.

  5. Be not afraid, 440 peeps. The machine can never have the heart, the soul, the ethics of a human being. Being a professional, being a fine person, are far more important that speed of computation or knowing the square root of pi.
